H.I.D.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting has been the backbone of industrial, commercial, and outdoor lighting for decades, providing powerful illumination that can light up warehouses, parking lots, sports facilities, and roadways with relatively few fixtures. HID technology produces light by passing an electric arc through an ionized gas, resulting in significantly higher light output per watt than traditional incandescent bulbs and much greater intensity than fluorescent lighting.

The HID family includes three main technologies, each with distinct characteristics: metal halide for applications requiring good color rendering and white light, high pressure sodium for maximum efficiency with that characteristic golden glow, and low pressure sodium for specialized applications. Each technology offers different trade-offs between efficiency, color quality, light output, and cost, making them suitable for different applications.

Metal halide is the go-to choice when color rendering matters. With CRI values ranging from 65 to 90 and crisp white light in the 3000K-5700K range, metal halide works well in retail stores, sports facilities, warehouses where color identification is important, and architectural applications. The light quality is considerably better than high pressure sodium, though the bulbs are somewhat less efficient and have shorter lifespans.

High pressure sodium dominates street lighting, parking lots, and security applications where energy efficiency is the priority and color rendering is less critical. These bulbs produce more lumens per watt than metal halide, making them economical to operate, though the yellow-orange light (around 2100K with CRI of 20-25) renders colors poorly. For pure visibility and navigation, HPS is hard to beat for efficiency.

Operating characteristics are similar across HID technologies: they require several minutes to warm up to full brightness, need a cool-down period before restriking if power is interrupted, and require specific ballasts matched to the bulb type and wattage. As HID bulbs age, they lose significant light output even before they fail completely, so replacement at 50-70% of rated life is recommended to maintain proper illumination levels.

While LED technology is gradually replacing HID in new installations due to even better efficiency, instant-on operation, and better light control, millions of HID fixtures remain in service worldwide. For these existing systems, quality replacement bulbs remain essential for maintaining proper lighting. The decision to retrofit to LED versus continuing with HID replacements depends on factors like energy costs, fixture age, maintenance labor expenses, and available capital for upgrades.

HID Technologies: Metal halide (best color rendering), high pressure sodium (highest efficiency), low pressure sodium (specialized applications)

Common Applications: Street and roadway lighting, parking lots and garages, warehouses and industrial facilities, sports lighting, retail stores, security and area lighting, building facades

Key Characteristics: High light output, long warm-up period, requires ballast, gradual lumen depreciation over life, better efficiency than incandescent or fluorescent
