Heat Lamps (Infrared)

Infrared heat lamps produce radiant heat through incandescent bulbs with special coatings or glass that emphasize infrared wavelengths, creating focused warmth for food service, animal husbandry, therapeutic applications, industrial drying processes, and various situations where targeted heat is needed. Unlike forced-air heating that warms the surrounding air, infrared heat lamps directly warm objects and surfaces in their beam path, making them highly efficient for applications where you need to warm specific items or areas without heating an entire space.

The most common format is the BR40 or PAR38 heat lamp with a red glass envelope, typically 250 watts, found in restaurant kitchens for keeping prepared food warm at serving stations. The red glass filters out much of the visible light while passing infrared radiation, creating heat without excessive brightness. Clear glass heat lamps produce the same radiant heat but with more visible light, useful in applications like bathroom heat lamps, animal husbandry, or industrial processes where illumination is beneficial alongside heating.

Food service applications require heat lamps to maintain proper food temperatures (typically 140°F or above for hot foods) in serving lines, buffets, warming stations, and kitchen holding areas. The instant-on nature of incandescent heat lamps is advantageous here – they reach full heat output immediately when switched on and cool quickly when turned off, providing responsive temperature control. Multiple lamps are often used in holding areas to maintain consistent temperatures across all food items.

Animal husbandry uses heat lamps extensively for providing supplemental warmth to newborn and young animals – chicks, puppies, kittens, piglets, reptiles, and others that need controlled temperature environments. The spot heating allows animals to move toward or away from the heat source to self-regulate their temperature. Safety considerations are critical in these applications: lamps must be securely mounted (animals can't knock them down), maintained at safe distances from bedding materials (fire hazard), and protected with wire guards to prevent direct contact with the hot bulb.

Therapeutic applications include physical therapy treatments where heat promotes muscle relaxation and increased blood flow, bathroom heat lamps for supplemental warmth, and various wellness applications. The radiant heat penetrates slightly into tissues, creating a warming effect that many find comfortable and therapeutic. However, medical-grade therapeutic applications often use specialized infrared devices rather than simple heat lamps.

Industrial applications use heat lamps for drying processes, paint curing, plastic forming, and various manufacturing operations requiring localized heat. Bank arrays of heat lamps can provide substantial concentrated heat for these processes. The instant-on capability, precise directionality, and ability to create heat without heating the entire workspace make infrared lamps valuable in industrial settings.

Safety precautions are essential with heat lamps. The surface temperature of a 250W heat lamp bulb can exceed 500°F during operation – hot enough to cause serious burns or ignite combustible materials. Maintain adequate clearances from all combustibles (typically 18 inches minimum), use porcelain or heat-rated sockets (standard plastic sockets can melt), ensure fixtures are rated for heat lamp wattages, and never leave heat lamps unattended in animal enclosures or other situations where fire hazards exist. The bulbs remain extremely hot for several minutes after being turned off.

Common Types: BR40 red heat lamp (250W - most common for food service), PAR38 red or clear heat lamp (100W-250W), R40 clear heat lamp, various specialty configurations

Primary Applications: Restaurant food warming, animal husbandry (warming young animals), therapeutic heat, bathroom heating, industrial drying and processing, paint curing, various heating applications

Safety Critical: Extremely hot during operation (500°F+), maintain clearances from combustibles, use heat-rated sockets, secure mounting essential, never leave unattended in animal areas
