Incandescent
Incandescent bulbs are the original electric light source, using a simple tungsten filament heated until it glows to produce warm, natural-looking light. While residential general-service incandescent bulbs have been phased out in many regions due to efficiency regulations, numerous specialty incandescent bulbs remain available and necessary for specific applications where their unique characteristics are needed or where alternatives aren't suitable.
The appeal of incandescent lighting has always been simplicity and light quality. They produce warm, inviting light with perfect color rendering (CRI 100) and a color temperature around 2700K that most people find comfortable and natural for residential spaces. They're fully dimmable with any standard dimmer switch, reaching full brightness instantly with no warm-up period. The technology is straightforward – no ballast, no driver electronics, no compatibility issues – just screw in a bulb and it works.
Current availability focuses on specialty categories where LED alternatives aren't ideal or don't exist yet. Rough service bulbs with reinforced filaments for applications with vibration or impact. High-temperature oven and appliance bulbs designed to operate in 300°F+ environments where LED electronics would fail. Decorative bulbs for chandeliers and vintage-style fixtures where the visible filament is part of the aesthetic. Shatter-resistant bulbs with safety coatings for food service and industrial settings. Three-way bulbs for lamps with three-way sockets.
Industrial and commercial specialty incandescent bulbs remain common in applications like heat lamps, infrared heating, process drying, food warming, scientific instruments, and indicator lights in certain equipment. Some theatrical and entertainment lighting still uses incandescent technology for specific color rendering requirements and dimming behavior that LED hasn't fully replicated yet.
The practical limitations are well understood: short lifespan (typically 1,000-2,000 hours), significant heat generation, and energy consumption that's 4-5 times higher than LED for equivalent light output. These factors make incandescent unsuitable for general lighting in most modern applications, but where their specific characteristics are needed – perfect dimming, high heat operation, special bases, or aesthetic considerations – they remain the appropriate choice.
Available Types: Rough service, high temperature (oven/appliance), decorative and chandelier bulbs, three-way bulbs, shatter-resistant, vibration service, silver bowl, colored bulbs, heat lamps, reflector bulbs (where still permitted)
Common Applications: Appliances (ovens, refrigerators), decorative fixtures, specialty industrial equipment, heat lamps, rough service environments, vintage lighting fixtures, three-way lamps, specific commercial applications
