LED MR16, MR11 Type
LED MR16 and MR11 bulbs are designed for directional lighting applications where you need focused, controllable light – think track lighting, recessed downlights, display cases, and landscape lighting. The "MR" stands for multifaceted reflector, which is the parabolic reflector inside the bulb that helps direct the light into a specific beam pattern. MR16 bulbs are 2 inches (50mm) in diameter, while MR11 bulbs are smaller at about 1.4 inches (35mm).
These bulbs typically run on low voltage (12V) systems, though some newer versions operate on standard line voltage (120V). The most common base types are GU5.3 (bi-pin with 5.3mm spacing) for 12V MR16, and GU10 (twist-and-lock) for 120V versions. It's crucial to match the voltage – a 12V bulb needs a transformer, while a 120V bulb plugs directly into line voltage. Using the wrong voltage will either damage the bulb or simply not work.
Beam angles are one of the most important specs to consider. Narrow spot beams (15-25 degrees) create dramatic accent lighting, perfect for highlighting artwork, architectural features, or specific products in a retail display. Flood beams (35-60 degrees) provide broader coverage for general room lighting or illuminating larger areas. If you're replacing existing halogen MR16s, try to match the beam angle to maintain the same lighting effect.
One thing to watch for: not all LED MR16s are dimmable, and those that are may not work smoothly with every dimmer switch. If dimming is important for your application, look for bulbs specifically labeled as dimmable and check compatibility with your dimmer. Some older magnetic transformers used with halogen MR16s may also cause issues with LED versions – if you experience flickering or the bulbs won't turn on, you might need to upgrade to an LED-compatible electronic transformer.
Common Applications: Track lighting, recessed ceiling fixtures, under-cabinet lighting, display and accent lighting, landscape and outdoor lighting, retail and commercial spaces
