Halogen Bulbs
Halogen bulbs represent an evolution of traditional incandescent technology, using a tungsten filament surrounded by halogen gas to produce bright, crisp white light. They've been the go-to choice for applications requiring excellent color rendering, precise beam control, and instant full brightness – qualities that made them particularly popular in retail displays, art galleries, museum lighting, and architectural applications.
The halogen advantage comes down to light quality and versatility. With a color rendering index (CRI) of 100 – the maximum possible – halogen bulbs reveal colors exactly as they appear in natural sunlight. This matters tremendously in retail environments where product appearance drives purchasing decisions, in galleries where artwork must be accurately represented, and in hospitality venues where ambiance depends on lighting quality. The light itself is whiter and brighter than standard incandescent bulbs, with a color temperature around 2900-3000K that feels crisp without being harsh.
Beam control is another halogen strength, especially in reflector formats like MR16, PAR, and AR111. These bulbs come in precisely defined beam angles – narrow spots around 10-15 degrees for accent lighting, medium floods at 25-40 degrees for general illumination, and wide floods at 60 degrees for broader coverage. This precision makes them ideal for track lighting, recessed downlights, and landscape applications where you need to control exactly where the light goes.
The practical considerations: halogen bulbs run hot – significantly hotter than incandescent and much hotter than LED. This heat output needs to be accounted for in fixture selection and placement. They're also less energy-efficient than LEDs, using about 25-30% less energy than standard incandescent bulbs but still consuming considerably more power than LED equivalents. Typical lifespan runs 2,000-4,000 hours depending on the specific bulb type and application.
Many of our customers are evaluating LED alternatives to halogen, and it's a reasonable consideration given energy costs and LED improvements in color quality. Modern LED MR16 and PAR bulbs can now match halogen color rendering quite closely, though some lighting professionals still prefer halogen for critical color applications. The choice often comes down to your specific priorities: energy efficiency and long life (LED) versus light quality and lower upfront cost (halogen).
Common Applications: Track lighting systems, recessed downlights, retail and display lighting, art gallery and museum installations, hospitality and restaurant ambiance, landscape and architectural lighting, automotive headlights
