Compact Fluorescent (CFLs)
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) were the bridge technology between inefficient incandescent bulbs and modern LEDs, and they still have a place in certain applications. These bulbs use the same fluorescent technology as linear tubes but pack it into a compact, twisted or folded shape that fits standard light sockets. They use about 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs and last roughly 8-10 times longer, making them a practical choice for applications where LED isn't necessary or cost is a primary concern.
The main advantage CFLs still offer is upfront cost – they're typically less expensive than equivalent LED bulbs, which matters when you're replacing dozens or hundreds of bulbs at once. They also work reliably in certain fixtures where LED bulbs can have compatibility issues, particularly some enclosed fixtures, recessed cans with limited ventilation, and fixtures connected to older dimmer switches. For rental properties, commercial spaces with tight budgets, or temporary lighting needs, CFLs can make economic sense.
The practical downsides are worth knowing. CFLs take time to warm up – usually 30 seconds to a few minutes to reach full brightness, longer in cold environments. This makes them less ideal for closets, bathrooms, or outdoor fixtures in cold climates where you want immediate light. They're more fragile than LEDs and contain small amounts of mercury, requiring proper disposal through recycling programs. Frequent on-off cycling shortens their lifespan, so they work best in locations where lights stay on for extended periods.
Color quality varies significantly across CFL products. Basic CFLs often have that harsh, slightly greenish cast that gives fluorescent lighting a bad reputation. Better quality CFLs with higher CRI ratings (80+) provide much more natural-looking light, though they typically cost more. Color temperature options range from warm white (2700K) that approximates incandescent light to daylight (5000K-6500K) for task-oriented spaces.
If you're stocking CFLs, focus on the most common configurations: standard A-shape bulbs in 60W and 100W equivalents, spiral and twisted tube designs, and three-way bulbs for lamps with three-way sockets. For commercial applications, pin-base CFLs (with separate ballasts) are common in recessed fixtures and wall sconces. Just be aware that as LED prices continue falling, CFL demand is declining gradually.
Common Applications: General household lighting, rental properties, commercial spaces on a budget, fixtures with compatibility issues for LED, areas where lights stay on for long periods
Available Formats: Spiral, twisted tube, A-shape, globe, candelabra, three-way, dimmable options, pin-base with separate ballast, various wattages (9W-32W typically, replacing 40W-150W incandescent)
