2-Pin Halogen Bulbs

Two-pin halogen bulbs represent a diverse category of compact, high-output halogen capsules used in countless applications from landscape lighting and under-cabinet fixtures to architectural installations and specialized equipment. The bi-pin base design – two parallel pins that plug into a socket – provides secure mechanical connection and good electrical contact in a compact form factor, making these bulbs ideal for applications where space is limited or the bulb needs to be recessed.

The most common configurations include GU5.3 bases (5.3mm pin spacing) used primarily in 12V MR16 reflector bulbs for track and recessed lighting, GY6.35 bases for compact capsules in under-cabinet and specialty fixtures, G4 bases for miniature capsules common in desk lamps and decorative lighting, and G9 bases for line-voltage capsules popular in European-style fixtures. Each base designation indicates specific pin diameter, spacing, and intended voltage, making it critical to match replacements exactly.

Voltage requirements vary widely in 2-pin halogen bulbs, and using the wrong voltage is one of the most common causes of premature failure. Many 2-pin halogens operate on low voltage – typically 6V, 12V, or 24V – requiring a transformer to step down from line voltage. Others operate directly on 120V or 130V line voltage. A 12V bulb installed in a 120V socket will flash bright and immediately burn out. A 120V bulb in a 12V socket simply won't light. Always verify the voltage requirement before ordering replacements.

The compact capsule design allows these bulbs to generate substantial light output from a very small envelope – a characteristic that makes them versatile but also means they run hot. The outer bulb surface can reach temperatures high enough to cause burns or ignite nearby flammable materials if not properly shielded. Some 2-pin halogens are designed for open fixtures, while others require enclosed fixtures that protect the bulb from contact. The fixture requirements are typically marked on the bulb packaging.

Wattage ranges from as low as 5 watts for miniature G4 capsules up to 75+ watts for larger capsules used in torchiere floor lamps and high-output fixtures. Higher wattages produce more light but also more heat and consume more energy. In recent years, many customers have sought lower-wattage alternatives or LED replacements for high-wattage 2-pin halogens, particularly in torchiere lamps where a 300W halogen capsule can make a room uncomfortably warm.

LED replacements for 2-pin halogen bulbs have become increasingly available, offering the usual LED advantages of dramatic energy savings (75-85% reduction), cool operation, and long life (25,000+ hours). However, compatibility issues can arise. Some LED replacements don't work properly with electronic transformers designed for halogen loads. Dimming behavior may differ. The light distribution pattern might not match the original halogen. For critical applications, testing LED replacements in your specific fixtures before committing to quantity purchases is advisable.
