Fluorescent
Fluorescent lighting has been a workhorse technology for commercial and industrial applications since the 1930s, offering significantly better energy efficiency than incandescent bulbs and long lifespans that reduce maintenance costs. While LED technology is gradually replacing fluorescent in many new installations, millions of fluorescent fixtures remain in operation, and replacement bulbs continue to be essential for maintaining existing lighting systems.
The basic principle involves passing electricity through mercury vapor, which produces ultraviolet light that then strikes a phosphor coating on the inside of the glass tube, causing it to glow with visible light. This process is much more efficient than heating a filament, which is why fluorescent bulbs use about 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs for the same light output. The technology comes in several formats: linear tubes (T12, T8, T5), compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs), U-bend tubes, circular tubes, and 2D formats.
Color rendering in fluorescent lighting has improved dramatically since the early days of harsh, greenish commercial lighting. Modern tri-phosphor fluorescent bulbs offer much better color quality, with CRI values typically ranging from 75 to 85 – not quite as good as halogen or high-quality LED, but perfectly adequate for most commercial applications. Color temperature options range from warm white (2700K-3000K) suitable for hospitality and residential use, to neutral white (3500K-4100K) common in offices, to cool white (5000K-6500K) used in industrial and retail settings.
The main considerations with fluorescent lighting are ballast compatibility and proper disposal. All fluorescent bulbs require a ballast to regulate the electrical current, and older magnetic ballasts can cause flickering, humming, and reduced efficiency. Electronic ballasts are quieter and more efficient, but you need to ensure bulb and ballast compatibility. Since fluorescent bulbs contain small amounts of mercury, they require proper disposal through recycling programs rather than being thrown in regular trash.
Many businesses are evaluating whether to continue maintaining fluorescent systems or retrofit to LED. The decision often depends on the age of the fixtures, energy costs, maintenance labor expenses, and available capital for upgrades. LED retrofit kits can work in some fluorescent fixtures, but compatibility issues mean it's not always straightforward. For functioning fluorescent systems with several years of useful life remaining, continuing with fluorescent bulb replacements often makes economic sense.
